B & G's 7/25/09

Baseballs:

**Kevin Hart, Chicago Cubs- The Cubs gave him enough runs, but he threw 6 innings, giving up 1 run (1 earned), he walked 1 and struck out 4. Kevin earned his 2Nd win of the season and he has a 2.08 ERA.

**Gio Gonzales, Oakland Athletics- Gio went against a team that had won 8 in a row and did absolutely nothing wrong for quite some time, but he completely shut the team down. He threw 6 2/3 innings, giving up 1 run (1 earned), he walked 3 and struck out 6. Gio won his 2Nd game of the season and now has a 7.75 ERA.

**Carlos Pena, Tampa Bay Rays- Pena helped his team come back from 8 runs down. He responded by going 2-6, including hitting his 25Th Home Run of the season, he hit a triple and drove in 4 runs, giving him 64 RBIs. Carlos is now hitting .227 on the year.

**Carlos Guillen, Detroit Tigers- Walk off single to drive in the winning run in the 10Th inning. Carlos went 2-5 and drove in 2 runs, giving him 9 RBIs on the season. Carlos is now hitting .225.

**Jimmy Rollins, Philadelphia Phillies- Jimmy went 2-5, he hit his 9Th Home Run of the season, a grand slam and drove in 5 runs, giving him 43 RBIs. Jimmy is hitting .237 on the year.

**Jeremy Sowers, Cleveland Indians- Jeremy got the call up and started today, he responded by throwing 7 shutout innings. He walked 2 and struck out 2. Jeremy needed that for his team, but he also needed that for his confidence and it should be interesting to see if he can throw 2 straight Quality Starts back to back because he has yet to do that for the Indians. He now has a 5.15 ERA.

**Jon Lester, Boston Red Sox- Jon dominated the Orioles tonight, by throwing 7 1/3 innings, giving up 2 runs (2 earned), walking 2 and struck out 9. Jon now has a 3.79ERA.

**Chone Figgins, Los Angeles Angels- Chone got the ball rolling in the 4Th inning with his 3rd Home Run of the season, he finished the day 2-4 with a walk and 3 runs scored. Chone now has 36 RBIs and is hitting .312.

**Jonathan Nieve, New York Mets- Nieve threw 7 solid innings, giving up 1 run (1 earned), walked 2 and struck out 3. Nieve got some help from his offense by scoring 10 runs, but he'll take that. Nieve won his 2Nd Major League start and has a 4.08 ERA.

**Yovani Gallardo, Milwaukee Brewers- Yovani gave the Brewers a quality outing, blanking the Atlanta Braves. He threw 7 1/3 innings, he didn't give up a run, he walked 4 and struck out 6. Yovani now has a 3.08 ERA.

**Adam Dunn, Washington Nationals- Adam finished 2-3 with a sacrifice fly, driving in 5 runs, giving him 70 on the season. Adam hit his 25Th Home Run of the season and he is hitting .275.

**Luke Hochevar, Kansas City Royals- Worked 7 strong innings, giving up 3 runs (2 earned), he didn't walk anyone and struck out 13. Luke now has a 4.80 ERA.

**Tory Tulowitsky, Colorado Rockies- Troy drove in a key career RBIs, he now has 45 RBIs. Troy was a triple away from hitting the cycle. Troy is now hitting .253.

**Doug David, Arizona Diamondbacks- Doug threw 6 scoreless innings, he walked 3 and struck out 8. Doug now has a 3.76 ERA.

**Casey Blake, Los Angeles Dodgers- Picked up the walk off single, giving his Dodgers a 4-3 win. Casey went 1-4 with a walk and drove in his 58Th RBI and Casey is now hitting .275 on the season.

Goofballs:

**Reds Offense- Had no answers for the rookie Hart, and didn't threaten until the end of the game. 3 runs on 7 hits, 1 walk, and 8 strikeouts.

**Alfredo Aceves, New York Yankees- Alfredo didn't help Andy Pettitte, or the Yankees. He only threw 1/3 of an inning, gave up 2 runs (2 earned), Aceves now has a 2.89 ERA.

**Scott Downs, Toronto Blue Jays- Blew his 3rd save of the season, 2Nd this week. He gave up 2 runs (2 earned), did not walk a batter and struck out 1. Scott now has a 3.06 ERA.

**Bobby Jenks, Chicago White Sox- Even though he did not lose the game, he blew his 4Th save. He threw 1 1/3 innings, but gave up 1 run (1 earned), he didn't walk anyone, but struck out 2. Bobby now has a 4.33 ERA and the White Sox have to win tomorrow to avoid being swept by the Tigers in a 4 game series.

**Jason Motte, St. Louis Cardinals- Blew the lead for the Cardinals and gave up the grand slam to Jimmy Rollins. He only lasted 1/3 of an inning, gave up 5 runs (5 earned), he walked 2 and didn't strike anyone out. Jason now has a 5.70 ERA.

**Chris Jakubauskis, Seattle Mariners- Chris came in and did not give his Mariners a chance to come back. He threw 1 2/3 innings, giving up 6 runs (4 earned), he gave up 2 Home Runs and now has a 5.59 ERA.

**Adam Jones, Baltimore Orioles- The young Centerfielder had a tough night, he went 0-5 with 3 strikeouts. His offense didn't help either, scoring 2 runs, 10 hits, and 10 strikeouts. Adam is now hitting .302.

**Nick Blackburn, Minnesota Twins- He was fine through his first 3 innings, but had a very troubled 4Th inning that he couldn't survive. In all, he threw 3 2/3 innings, giving up 6 runs (6 earned), he walked 1 and didn't strike anyone out. Nick now has a 3.75 ERA.

**Russ Ortiz, Houston Astros- Russ was bad, he only lasted 4 1/3 innings, giving up 6 runs (6 earned), he walked 4 and struck out 3. Russ has a 4.75 ERA.

**Atlanta Braves Offense- no runs, 4 hits, walked 4 and struck out 8. Just not a good night in the office.

**Luis Perdomo, San Diego Padres- Luis threw 3 innings, giving up 5 runs (5 earned), he walked 4 and struck out 7. Luis now has a 4.42 ERA this year.

**Rangers Offense- 3 runs, 6 hits, 1 walk, 16 strikeouts. 3 players struck out 3 times. Hank Blalock, Andreuw Jones, and Josh Hamilton all did the deed.

**Jonathan Sanchez, San Francisco Giants- Not exactly a perfect outing, but he still struggled, throwing 5 innings, giving up 5 runs (5 earned), he walked 4 and struck out 5. Jonathan now has a 4.92 ERA.

**Evan Meek- Evan threw 1 inning, he gave up 4 runs (4 earned), he walked 1 and struck out 1. Evan now has a 4.36 ERA.

**Dan Meyer- Dan only pitched 1/3 of an inning, he did give up 1 run (1 earned), Dan now has a 2.13 ERA.

Roy Halladay Rumors

Roy Halladay Rumors:

10:20 PM: Jon Heyman reports that the Yankees might consider giving up Chamberlain for Halladay, but won't entertain both Chamberlain and Hughes.

8:15 PM: According to Jon Heyman, the Jays suggested to the Yankees today that it would take Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes, and two more for Halladay. According to Ken Rosenthal, the Jays want a 4 player packages from the Angels that included Joe Saunders, Brandon Wood, Erick Aybar, and one other prospect.

5:00 PM: The Blue Jays have presented offers to the Phillies, Angles, and Dodger. "The ball is in their court according to Jays' officials. The Angels did make a run at Halladay according to Yahoo Sports, offering Jered Weaver plus a position player prospect, but it wasn't enough for Toronto.

2:40 PM:
Jeff Blair is reporting that "there's one big team yet to make a play for Doc." Could that be the Red Sox?

1:02 PM:
Jordan Bastian is reporting the the Phillies have rejected the Blue Jays offer, containing both Drabek and Happ (they don't want to give both away.)

12:44 PM:
Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Angels have "intensified their bid" for Halladay. It's been reported the the Jays would want a player on the Angels, and an impact player for the 2010 season, as well as other good prospects. Sources don't believe a deal will be completed this weekend.

10:46 AM:
According to Jayson Stark reports that the Phils are backing off the trade proposal of J.A. Happ, Kyle Drabek and Dominic Brown. It seems like the Phils would like to substitute one of the pitchers for Carlos Carrasco.

9:26 AM
: Jon Heyman reports that "there's no way he stays {Halladay}" with the Blue Jays, some of those discussions are "intense."

Stros DFA Chad Paronto

Alyson Footer reports that the Astros have designated reliever Chad Paronto for assignment.

Red Sox Rumors

According to Jon Heyman; the Red Sox are looking to upgrade at SS, even with the return of Jed Lowrie. Heyman points out that Boston has checked out Jack Wilson and Orlando Cabrera.

Paul Kenyon reports that the Red Sox have released outfielder Paul McAnulty, he was leading the AAA afialite in homeruns and RBI's.

Mr. Baseball's Latest

Here's the latest from Peter Gammons of ESPN:
  • It will take a "gaggle" of prospects to pry Zach Duke from the Pirates.
  • The Yankees were told that the price for Halladay was Phil Hughes, Austion Jackson, and Jesus Montero.
  • The Rays will see what they can get for Carl Crawford after the season and will hold on to the prospects that they consider keepers.

Saturday Night Updates

  • According to Ed Price, it's possible for the Red to add Scott Rolen, but a lot would have to happen.
  • With Ted Lilly out for about 3 week, Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago is reporting that Jim Hendry may be trying to add a stater before Friday's Trade Deadline, or the team could decide to move Sean Marshall back to the rotation, but then they would need a lefty to take his place in the pen.
  • Tony LaCava, a top advisor for the Blue Jays, was on hand for Carrasco's bad outing last night, which is not good for the Phillies.

Let's Catch Up: AL Central Rumors and More

  • According to Scott Murkin of MLB.com, the White Sox aren't likely to add a major piece to their playoff puzzle before Friday's deadline.
  • The Twins are eyeing A's Orlando Cabrera.
  • The Blue Jays and Reds are discussing third baseman Scott Rollen. Reds' infielder Edwin Encarnacion would be included according to FOX Sports, but the two sides are still trying to figure out which other players would be involved.
  • The Brewers have agreed to terms with pitcher Kyle Heckathron, who they drafted in the first year player draft.
  • Rays' SS Reid Brignac was pulled from AAA Durham's lineup in the third inning of their game today for a non-injury reason. There was talk of a trade on the way, but sources say his right leg was bothering him while other sources say he was pulled due to lack of hustle to first base.

Tigers Interestd in Bradley

David Kaplan is reporting that Milton Bradley is drawing interest to the Tigers. Two baseball sources believe this to be true. How much would the Cubs have to eat of Bradley s contract?

Update: According to Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune, there have been no conversations with any teams about Milton Braldey.

Dbacks Could move Snyder

Scott Bordow reports that the Diamondbacks could move Chris Snyder with the breakout year of Miguel Montero. Snyder should be coming off the DL this upcoming week, but a move may be hard with with his three year 14.25 million dollar deal he signed last off-season.

Countdown to the Deadline: 6 Days

The trade deadline is nearing, and we saw the first big trade yesterday with Matt Holliday going from Oakland to the Cardinals. Will we see any more big trades in the next 6 days? We can only wait!

Buehrle Perfect-o
27 up, 27 down. Mark Buehrle of the Chicago White Sox was perfect on Thursday, only the 18th perfect game in the history of Major League Baseball. Dewayne Wise made an amazing catch in the 9th to take away a home run, and the first Rays' hit. Mark got a call from President O'bama and said he was more nervous during that phone call than in the 9th of his perfect-o. The last perfect game was tossed by Randy Johnson of the D'backs on May 18, 2004. Eric Cooper was the home plate umpire for the game, and was also the plate ump for Buehrle's last no hitter on April 18, 2007.

  • Vince Padilla of the Rangers has been diagnosed with swine flu.
  • Ted Lilly of the Cubs has been placed on the DL with a shoulder injury.
  • Pedro Martinez will make a minor league rehab start today.
  • Tomorrow is the 2009 MLB Hall of Fame inductions. Jim Rice and Rickey Henderson will be joining the group of the game's elite players tomorrow afternoon.

Kazmir Rumors

Mark Saxon reports that there are no discussions between teams about Scott Kazmir.

The Angels' sights remain high in their search for pitching help before the July 31 trade deadline. They hope to add either a front-line starting pitcher or reliever who can reliably handle the eighth inning.

A's Rumors

Susan Slusser reports that the Angels "prepared to make a strong bid" for Michael Wuertz, it could start with infielder Sean Rodriguez.

Will the A's trade within the division?

Susan also mentions that the Twins are interested in SS Orlando Cabrera, but do they have the prospects?
