B & G's 7/24/09

Baseballs:

**John Verlander, Detroit Tigers- A complete game for John, he gave up 1 unearned run, he did walk 4 and struck out 4. But with this being a double header today, John gave his team and bullpen some much needed depth. John now has a 3.12 ERA winning his 11Th game.

**Aramis Ramirez, Chicago Cubs- Aramis was huge today, he went 4-5 at the plate, with 2 doubles and he hit his 6Th Home Run of the season, driving in 3 runs, giving him 23 RBIs. The Cubs will need the former 3rd baseman healthy and able to get back in the division race and today, he gave them that lift. Ramirez is now hitting .325.

**Carlos Guillen, Detroit Tigers- The Tigers took the 2Nd game of the double header, thanks in part to a walk with the bases loaded, but make no mistake about it, Carlos Guillen gave the Tigers a big lift. He went 2-3, including hitting his 1st Home Run of the season, a solo shot. Carlos has 7 RBIs and is hitting .216.

**Brad Penny, Boston Red Sox- Brad gave the Sox a very solid outing, throwing 6 1/3 innings, he gave up 1 run (0 earned), he didn't walk anyone and struck out 4. Brad now has a 4.71 ERA.

**Joba Chamberlain-Joba threw 7 strong innings and his offense made sure he got the win. He just gave up 1 run (1 earned), he walked 3 and struck out 6. Joba now has a 3.86 ERA and won his 6Th game of the season.

**Matt Holliday, St. Louis Cardinals- The Cardinals are the big winners so far in the trade sweepstakes, and tonight, he just arrived in Philadelphia and responded by going 4-5 with a double and he drove in his 55Th run of the season. Matt is now hitting .293.

**Evan Longoria, Tampa Bay Rays- Evan hit the game winning hit that drove in 2 runs, in all he finished the night 1-2 with 2 walks and he drove in 3 runs, giving him 75 RBIs. Evan is now hitting .274 on the season.

**Mat Latos, San Diego Padres- Mat earned his 1st Major League victory for the Padres tonight, he threw 5 2/3 innings, giving up 2 runs (2 earned), he walked 2 and struck out 5. Mat now has a 3.72 ERA.

**Mike Hampton, Houston Astros- Mike not only worked a solid game, but he also hit his 1st Home Run of the season, driving in 2 runs, giving him 6 RBIs. Mike is hitting .313. He did work 5 2/3 innings, giving up 4 runs (4 earned), he walked 4 and struck out 7. Mike now has a 4.74 ERA.

**Martin Prado, Atlanta Braves- Martin finished the night 2-5 with his 6Th Home Run of the season, driving in 4 runs. Martin is now hitting .326.

**Scott Feldman, Texas Rangers- Scott threw 8 shutout innings, he walked 3 and struck out 2. Scott won his 9Th game and he has a 3.59 ERA.

**Matt Cain, San Francisco Giants- Matt earned his 12Th win of the season, he threw 7 strong innings, giving up 1 run (1 earned), he walked 4 and struck out 5. Matt now has a 2.27 ERA.

**Aaron Laffey, Cleveland Indians- 7 scoreless innings for the Indians, he gave up just 3 hits, walked 3 and struck out 7. Aaron now has a 3.71 ERA.

**Garrett Jones, Pittsburgh Pirates- Garrett went 2-5 and hit his 10Th Home Run of the season, he drove in 2 runs, giving him 15 RBIs with Garrett hitting .342.

**Jhohn Lackey, Los Angeles Angles- John controlled 7 2/3 innings, giving up 2 runs (2 earned), he walked 2 and struck out 3. Lackey now has a 4.22 ERA.

**Josh Johnson, Florida Marlins- Josh threw 7 scoreless innings, he didn't walk anyone and struck out 4. Josh now has a 2.80 ERA and he won his 9Th game of the season.

Goofballs:

**White Sox defense- Ozzie must have been flooring because his team committed 3 errors, and even though they only gave up 1 unearned run, it's still sloppy play when you are tied with the team you are facing in the division. Octavio Dotel (1st), Jermaine Dye (4Th), and Alexi Ramirez (12Th) were the culprits.

**Danny Herrera & Jared Burton- Both relievers gave up a combined 4 runs in the 8Th inning to widen their deficit at the time. Danny gave up 2 runs (2 earned) in 2/3 of an inning and he now has a 2.97 ERA, and Burton gave up 2 runs (2 earned) in 1/3 of an inning, he carries a 5.70 ERA.

**Scott Linebrink, Chicago White Sox- Scott lost the game, he gave up a run (1 earned) in the 8Th inning, losing his 2Nd game of the year. He walked 1 and struck out 1, along with giving up 2 hits. Scott now has a 2.62 ERA.

**Orioles Offense- They were completely shut down by the Red Sox pitching tonight, scoring 1 run on just 7 hits. They had walked 1 time and struck out 7. They didn't give their starter, Brad Bergesen much of a chance to win.

**Jack Cust, Oakland Athletics- The entire Athletics lineup had a tough night, just coming up with 4 hits, but he struck out 3 times. Jack is now hitting .236 after going 0-4.

**J.A. Happ, Philadelphia Phillies- J.A. suffered his 1st loss of the season, he did give them 6 innings, but he gave up 5 runs (5 earned), he didn't walk anyone and struck out 6. Happ will learn from this and he now has a 2.97 ERA.

**Scott Downs, Toronto Blue Jays- Scott lost the game, giving up 2 runs (2 earned) in 1 inning, he walked 2 and didn't strike anyone out. Scott now has a 2.59 ERA.

**Nationals Defense- Committed 4 errors tonight, Josh Bard (4Th), Jason Bergman (2Nd), Adam Dunn (12Th), and Garrett Mock (1st) all contributed to 3 unearned runs to score.

**Johan Santana, New York Mets- Johan had an off night, he worked 6 2/3 innings, giving up 5 runs (5 earned), he walked 3 and struck out 3. Johan now has a 3.12 ERA.

**Prince Fielder, Milwaukee Brewers- Prince struck out 4 times tonight, he went 0-4 and is now hitting .309.

**Royals Offense- The Royals got shut out, only connected with 5 hits, they walked 3 times and struck out 3. The Royals are now in last place all by themselves.

**Rockies Offense- The Rockies scored 1 run, but only could muster 4 hits, walked 5 times and struck out 5 times. Tough night at Coors Field.

**Miguel Batista, Seattle Mariners- Batista gave up 5 runs (5 earned) in the 9Th inning, he walked 1, struck out 1, and now has a 4.12 ERA.

**Yusmeiro Petit, Arizona Diamondbacks- Yusmerio only lasted 4 1/3 innings, he gave up 6 runs (6 earned), he walked 1 and struck out 6. Petit now has a 7.68 ERA.

**Francisco Liriano, Minnesota Twins- Francisco was a bit off tonight, he threw 5 1/3 innings, giving up 6 runs ( 6earned), he walked 2, struck out 3, and gave up 3 Home Runs. Francisco now carries a 5.56 ERA.

**Dodgers Offense- Take out Andre Either's 3 hits, and the Dodger find a way to get 3 hits. Just a horrible night at Chavez Ravine. Need to come back tomorrow, ready to go.

Around Baseball

  • Geoff Baker reports that the Mariners shouldn't expect as big of a return for Erik Bedard or Jarrod Washburn as the A's got for Holliday due to them being Type-B free agents.
The Yankees are interested in Jays closer Scott Downs; writes Jeff Blair. This is probably why the Yanks were scouting at today's Blue Jays game. He owns a 2.08 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP in 30.1 IP, he's been dominate the last 3 years.

Friday Halladay Rumors

Friday Halladay Rumors:

7:46 PM: Only the Yankees and Phillies have scouts watching Halladay; writes Bob Elliot.

6:47 PM: Bud Selig made a surprising statement "I was told by somebody with pretty good inside knowledge that they won’t get rid of him," (on Halladay.) Then said "Now, whether that’s true or not, I don’t know. And, you know, clubs are going to start bidding it up."

6:39 PM: Tom Haudricourt reports that Brewers GM said "it's not true that the Brewers have withdrawn from the bidding for Halladay."

6:05 PM: Andy Martino reports that the Jays have asked for Kyle Drabek, J.A. Happ, and outfielder Dominic Brown.

5:30 PM: Jordan Bastian heard from a source that Doc will not be traded to Philly within the next 24 hours.

4:50 PM: Ed Price reports the Jays are asking for Kyle Drabek, Michael Taylor, Jason Donald and Lou Marson (Jays considering), but no deal seems to be close.

4:23 PM: Danny Knobler reports that the Phillies are "fully determined" to acquire Halladay, with the Dodgers as a slim chance of acquiring him. As for the Jays, one official says "it's obvious that they have to move him now."

4:04 PM: Jon Heyman writes; The Jays could get a stronger overall cast if they accept J.A. Happ in place of Kyle Drabek.

3:58 PM: Danny Knobler now reports that the Brewers are now out of the Halladay sweepstakes, basically because they don't want to give up Mat Gamel or Alcides Escobar.

3:30 PM: Danny Knobler reports that the Phillies are still the favorite, but teams are not close to completing a deal.

2:02 PM: Dodgers GM Ned Colletti says the Jays want 2 or 3 current Dodgers (including a young pitcher) and five or six prospects; writes Ken Gurnick.

2:01 PM: Jon Heyman reports that the Phillies are "trying hard" to acquire Halladay. Heyman also states that he'd be surprised if the Phils don't get him.

11:44 AM: Ed Price reports that the Reds have interest in Halladay, but you gotta believe he wouldn't approve a trade to a team that is 6 games out of it's division.

Earlier today:
  • Ricciardi (told the Globe and Mail) reiterated that Halladay didn't give him a list of teams he's willing to play for, rather the team approached the player about possible destinations.
  • Jon Heyman tells us that the Phillies are the front runners for Halladay, but the Brewers have a shot.
  • Jim Salisbury talked to Ricciardi who said that their are four serious teams in Halladay who have the talent to acquire the ace.
  • Ricciardi told Mike Rutsey that the Jays will NOT pay any of Halladay's salary if he's traded.
  • Blue Jays would require Kyle Drabek and J.A. Happ in the deal according to Jim Salisbury sources.

Nats Dunn, Willingham

According to Bill Ladson; the Tigers are interested in Josh Willingham and Adam Dunn. The Natinals (kidding, Nationals) want young pitching in any deal, and have been scouting players with Detroit's Double-A affiliate. Bill also mentions that the Rangers are scouting the Nats, and might be interested in Willingham.

Rox DFA Ryan Speier

Steve Foster report; the Rockies designated reliever Ryan Speier for assignment. Speier has a 3.99 career ERA in 99.1 Major League innings.

M's DFA Roy Corcoran

Geoff Baker reports that righty reliever Roy Corcoran has been designated for assignment, Corcoran had a miserable 6.16 ERA in 19 IP this season.

Red Sox put Kotsay on Waivors

The Red Sox put Mark Kotsay on waivers to make room for the recently acquired Adam LaRoche; writes Nick Cafardo. Any team has 48 hours to claim him, or the Red Sox will release him or assign him to AAA.

Padres Star not on Trade Block

The Red Sox talked to the Padres about Adrian Gonzales, but the Padres "refused" to discuss the all-star first basemen.; according to to Jon Heyman. Even with the prospects the Red Sox have the Padres will not bite.

Red Sox still have interest in catcher Victor Martinez.

Cards Acquire Holliday

11:17 AM: Buster Olney also reports the deal is complete. He also states that the A's will pay 1.5 million of Holliday's contract leaving the remainder 4.5 million to the Cardinals.

11:10 AM:
Bernie Miklasz says the teams are reviewing medical record, and it will go down barring any medical concerns.

11:07 AM:
Ed Prices tells us the deal will go down, and their finalizing it now.

11:00 AM:
Jon Heyman says the deal is very close to being finalized.

Update:
Outfielder Shane Peterson and righty Clayton Mortensen are also headed to Oakland if the deal goes through. Its still unclear how the money for Holliday will be spread between teams, also the Cards might want the A's to pay Wallaces signing bonus.

According to Tim Kurkjian; the Cardinals are really close to acquiring Matt Holliday from the A's for Brett Wallace and two other players.

Angels Rumors

Here are a few rumors from LA's Bill Shaikin:
  1. Mike Scioscia wants Bobby Abreu to return after the season, Abreu is a free agent after the season.
  2. The Angels want to add a reliever, since adding a starting pitcher will be more difficult.
  3. Rafael Betancourt was almost an Angel before being dealt to the Rockies from Cleveland.

Tigers DFA Josh Anderson

Jason Beck reports that The Tigers designated outfielder Josh Anderson for assignment to make room for Carlos Guillen who is rehabbing his shoulder.

A's Rumors

Susan Slusser passes along the latest A's rumors (not named Holliday):
  • Adam Kennedy loves it in Oakland and wants to stay.
  • The Twins might go after the A's Michael Wuertz and Orlando Cabrera, to solidify their bullpen and middle infield.
The Twins are still 2.5 games out of first place.

Yanks inquired on Lee

According to Jon Heyman; the Yanks called about Cliff Lee but they were told they'd have to give up Joba or Phil Hughes plus some more.
