B & G's 8/2/09

Baseballs:

**Dexter Fowler, Colorado Rockies- Connected on a RBI single to give the Rockies the lead for good in the 11th inning. Dexter finished up 1-2 and is hitting .254 with 28 RBIs.

**Carl Pavano, Cleveland Indians- Carl overpowered the Tigers, 8 strong innings, giving up 1 run (1 earned), he walked 1 and struck out 4. Carl won his 9th game and now has a 5.37 ERA.

**Jon Garland, Arizona Diamondbacks- A complete game for Jon, giving up 2 runs (2 earned), he didn't walk anyone and struck out 2. Jon now has a 4.26 ERA.

**Josh Willingham, Washington Nationals- Josh went 2-3 with a walk and hit his 17th Home Run of the season, he drove in 3 runs, giving him 42 RBIs. Josh is hitting .305 on the season.

**Victor Martinez, Boston Red Sox- Victor had a nice introduction his last 2 games. He finished up Sunday going 5-6 with a double and drove in 4 runs, giving him 72 RBIs. Victor is now hitting .291 on the season.

**Brian Bannister, Kansas City Royals- Brian threw 7 shutout innings, not walking anyone and struck out 7. Brian wins his 7th game and carries a 3.59 ERA.

**Melky Cabrera, New York Yankees- Melky hit for the cycle on Sunday. Melky finished up 4-5, including hitting his 10th Home Run of the season, he hit his 1st triple of the season, and of course a double. Melky drove in 4 runs, and was responsible for the 8-5 Yankees win. Melky has 40 RBIs and is hitting .292.

**Kendry Morales, LA Angels- Kendry hit 2 Home Runs, giving him 23 on the season, he went 3-5 and drove in 6 runs, giving him 69 RBIs. Kendry is now hitting .299

**Bud Norris, Houston Astros- Bud threw 7 shutout innings to eanr his 1st Major League win, he walked 4 and struck out 5. Bud now has a 0.90 ERA.

**Aaron Hill, Toronto Blue Jays- Aaron went 2-5 at the plate and hit his 26th Home Run of the season, driving in 2 runs, giving him 76 RBIs. Aaron is now hitting .291.

**Felipe Lopez, Milwaukee Brewers- Lopez got the big hit a 3 run double in the 7th inning. Felipe has 30 RBIs and he is hitting .303.

**Freddy Sanchez, San Francisco Giants- Freddy made a nice impression in his 1st game as a Giant. He went 2-4 and drove in 2 runs, giving him 36 RBIs, and he is hitting .298.

**Cody Ross, Florida Marlins- Cody hit 2 Home Runs, including a walk off shot, giving him 2 RBIs. Cody is now hitting .260 with 57 RBIs after his 2-4 evening.

**Matt Kemp, Los Angeles Dodgers- Matt went 3-5 at the plate and drove in 5 runs, including hitting his 14th Home Run of the season. Matt has 64 RBIs and is hitting .315.

**Scott Feldman, Texas Rangers- 7 strong innings, giving up 1 run (1 earned), he walked 2 and struck out 4. Scott won his 10th game and now has a 3.91 ERA.

Goofballs:

**Nick Masset, Cincinnati Reds- Nick gave up 2 runs (2 earned), losing the game, his 1st of the season and now has a 2.74 ERA.

**Tigers Offense- They had no answers for the Indians. Only 1 Tiger could get 2 hits, leaving 6 men on base.

**Mets Offense- 2 runs on only 7 hits, and 0 walks. They needed this win.

**Pirates Offense- 3 runs on 8 hits. Pat Malholm threw okay, he just didn't get any help from his offense.

**Jason Berken, Baltimore Orioles- Jason was horrible, only lasting 1 1/3 innings, giving up 6 runs (6 earned), he walked 2 and didn't strike anyone out. Jason now has a 6.39 ERA and lost his 9th game.

**Rays Offense- The Rays scored 1 run on 7 hits, they didn't walk anyone and struck out 10 times.

**Mark Buerhle, Chicago White Sox- Mark wasn't very good today, he worked 4 1/3 innings, giving up 7 runs (7 earned), he walked 1 and didn't strike anyone out. Mark now has a 3.79 ERA.

**Glen Perkins, Minnesota Twins- Glen threw 4 innings, giving up 9 runs (8 earned), he walked 1 and struck out 2. Glen lost his 7th game and has a 5.95 ERA.

**Cardinals Offense- They were shut out and only collected 3 hits, they walked 5 and struck out 6. They also left 7 men on base.

**Vin Mazzaro- Vin threw 5 innings, giving up 7 runs (7 earned), he walked 3 and struck out 4. Vin lost his 8th game and has a 5.73 ERA.

**Padres Offense- 1 run on only 5 hits, they did walk 8 and struck out 7. The Padres left 8 men on base.

**Cole Hamels, Philadelphia Phillies- Cole could only last 5 innings, giving up 6 runs (6 earned), he walked 2 and struck out 2. He has a 4.68 ERA and lost his 6th game.

**Kevin Gregg, Chicago Cubs- Blew his 5th save and lost his 3rd game of the year. He only threw 1/3 of an inning and then proceeded to give up back to back Home Runs to lose the game. Kevin now has a 4.17 ERA.

**Braves Offense- 1 run on just 5 hits and they struck out 11 men as a team.

**Sean White, Seattle Mariners- Lost the game by giving up 2 runs (2 earned) in the 7th inning of what was then a tie game. Sean now has a 3.28 ERA.

8-2 PCL Headlines

PCL (AAA) highlights:
  • The Omaha Royals fell to the Memphis Redbirds (Cardinals) 5-4. Tug Hulett, the DH, had a 2-run homer in the 6th. Brandon Duckworth pitched 6 strong innings for the Royals. Full box score.
  • Tacoma Rainers (Mariners) knocked off Fresno Grizzles (Giants) 10-6. Matt Downs, the Fresno first baseman, went 2-4 with a solo homer and a double. Jerry Owens and Matt Tuiasosopo each had 3 RBIs in the Rainers' win. Full box score
  • The Round Rock Express (Astros) topped the Okla. City Red Hawks (Rangers) 5-3. Polin Trinidad pitched 7 innings, allowed 3 runs and picked up the W. John Gall went 3-4 for RR. Full box score.
  • Sacramento (A's) edged Portland (Padres) in a pitchers' duel 2-1. Both starters, Mortensen and LeBlanc, allowed 1 run in 5+ innings. Full box score.
  • Albuquerque (Dodgers) beat Nashville (Brewers) 4-1. Haeger, who got his 11th win, allowed just 1 hit in 6 scoreless innings. Full Box score.
  • In the second of the double header Albuquerque made it a sweep with a 2-1 victory. Scrickland picked up his second save of the day, his 24th of th year for the Isotopes. Full box score.
  • The Reno Aces (D'backs) out-slugged Colorado Springs (Rockies) 10-9. Trent Oeltjen, of the Aces, went 3-5 including his 10th home run. Full Box score.
  • The Iowa Cubs were defeated by the New Orleans Zephyrs (Marlins) 3-1. Nobody on either team had more than 1 base hit, but Sanchez did walk twice and have a home run in the Zephyrs win. Full box score.
  • The Las Vegas 51s (Blue Jays) demolished Salt Lake (Angels) 18-6. The 51s pounded 6 home runs in the win. Full Box.

It'll be interesting to see who gets called up Sept. 1!

Rays released former first round pick

According to Joe Smith the Rays released former first round pick Wade Townsend, who has struggled with injuries and played very poorly in rookie ball. The Devil Rays at the time chose Davis when Andrew McCutchen, Jay Bruce, and Jacoby Ellsbury were all still available.
