MLB: The Hunt for the Postseason

Tonight here at the MLB Corner, we are starting a new series of posts. Each night at about an hour before the first night games start, one of us will create a post to preview that night's games that involve the contending teams only. We consider teams within 5 games of a playoff spot (wild card of division) AND/OR in second place in the division in playoff contention. I will start by posting pitching match ups, opponents, game times, ect. then will update as the night moves on.


AL East

New York Yankees
Record: 75-45
GB: First Place

Pitching Matchup: Chad Gaudin (5-10, 5.13 ERA) VS Brett Anderson (7-8, 4.55 ERA).
Yesterday: The Yankees took game 2 of the best of 3 set to even the series.
Notes:
* The Yankees are 4-2 on this road trip.
* According to the New York Times, Damso Marte might rejoin the team this weekend in Boston. Marte has missed almost 4 months with shoulder inflammation.
* Outfielder Brett Gardner will need to wear a splint on his broken left thumb for another week, but the Yankees expect him back in September.
* Mark Teixeira is a leading candidate for the AL MVP, and Mark Silva let Strat-O-Matic settle the debate.



Boston Red Sox

Yesterday: Red Sox won 10-9 to open the 3 game series.
Notes:
* Kevin Youkilils is trying to repeat as the Hark Aaron Award winner.
*According to Baseball Prospectus, the Red Sox have a 41.9% chance to make the playoffs.
* John Tomase of the Boston Herald thinks that the Red Sox need Varitek just to catch Josh Beckett, if nothing else.

Tampa Bay Rays

WC: 3rd place, 3 game back of BOS/TEX

Yesterday: Beat the O's in game 1 of the 2 game series 5-4.
Notes:
* Manager Joe Maddon has died his hair jet black.
* Rays prospect Darin Downs is out of intensive care and has been moved to a regular room at St. Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham today. He was hit in the head with a line drive 2 days ago.
*They are offering 50 cent hot dogs at the ballpark tonight!
* According to Jon Heyman, the Rays had offered LeVon Washington $1.1 million, less than they paid Carl Crawford 10 years ago.

* The Tigers have sent pitcher Eddie Bonine to AAA to make room for Aubrey Huff on the 25-man roster. They will try to get by with 11 pitchers until Sept. 1.
* Drew Sharp talked about the $18M option for Ordonez.



Chicago White Sox: Beat the Royals today 4-2 in the only big league day game.

* Torii Hunter posted on his MLB log yesterday.
* The Angles have won 8 of their last 10.

Texas Rangers

Pitching Matchup: Baker (10-7, 4.54 ERA) VS Millwood (9-7, 3.31 ERA)
Yesterday: Rangers lost 9-6 to even the 4 game series at 1 win a piece.
Notes:
* Newly acquired Pudge Rodrizez will make is expected to make his re-debut with the Rangers tonight.
* Today Willie Eyre was called up from AAA Oklahoma City to take Eddie Guardado's, who was placed on the 15-day DL, roster spot.
*Pudge is happy to be back in Texas so he has a chance to win.

Tonight I experienced some technical difficulties and was unable to post the NL, but starting tomorrow we will cover the contending teams in both leagues.

B & G's 8/18/09

Baseballs:

**Trevor Bell, LA Angels- Trevor earned his 1st Major League victory, going 5 1/3 innings, giving up 3 runs (3 earned), he walked 2 and struck out 2. Trevor now has a 5.91 ERA.

**Miguel Cabrera, Detroit Tigers- Miggy went 3-4 and drove in 2 runs, giving him 72 RBIs, putting the Tigers ahead for good. Cabrera is now hitting .334.

**Ulbaldo Jimenez, Colorado Rockies- 8 strong innings for the Rockies new ace, he gave up 2 runs (2 earned), walked 1, struck out 5, and he now has a 3.41 ERA with his 11th win.

**Jamie Moyer, Philadelphia Phillies- Jamie gave his team a big lift by throwing 6 shutout innings, not walking anyone and struck out 5. Moyer won his 11Th game of the year and he now has a 5.22 ERA.

**Ross Ohlendorf, Pittsburgh Pirates- Ross threw 7 strong innings, giving up 1 run (1 earned), he walked 2 and struck out 5. Ross cuts down his ERA to 4.15 and won his 11Th game of the season.

**Ryan Garko, San Francisco Giants- Ryan finished the night 2-5 and drove in 4 runs, giving his Giants the win. Ryan now has 47 RBIs and is hitting .273 on the season.

**Gary Sheffield, New York Mets- Gary had a good night, going 3-5 with 2 doubles, both in the 4Th inning and he drove in 2 runs, giving him 43 RBIs and he is now hitting .290.

**David Ortiz, Boston Red Sox- Papi went 2-3 at the plate with 2 walks, 3 runs scored, and 3 RBIs, including hitting his 18th Home Run. Ortiz is now hitting .224 and has 68 RBIs.

**Gabe Gross, Tampa Bay Rays- Gabe finished the night 2-4, he hit his 6Th Home Run of the season, a shot that gave his Rays the lead for good, 3-2. He drove in 2 runs, giving him 32 RBIs and Gabe is hitting .265.

**Ricky Nolasco, Florida Marlins- Ricky threw a complete game, giving up 2 runs (2 earned), he didn't walk anyone, and he struck out 10. Ricky won his 9Th game and now he has a 5.22 ERA.

**Joe Mauer, Minnesota Twins- Joe went 3-5 with 2 Home Runs, giving him 25 on the season and with his 3 RBIs, he has 77 RBIs. Joe is now hitting .383.

**Billy Butler, Kansas City Royals- Billy went 3-5, hit 3 doubles, and he drove in 2 runs, giving him 64 RBIs and a .304 average.

**Kevin Kouzmanoff, San Diego Padres- Kevin went 3-4 with 2 RBIs, giving him 70 RBIs. Kevin is now hitting .265 on the year.

**CC Sabathia, New York Yankees- CC threw 8 strong innings, giving up 2 runs (2 earned), he walked 1 and struck out 7. CC finally threw well in Oakland, a city he was born in and had up until now struggled to win his entire career. Sabathia has 14 wins and a 3.58 ERA.

**Chad Billingsley, Los Angeles Dodgers- Chad threw 6 strong innings, giving up 2 runs (2 earned), he didn't walk anyone and struck out 1. Chad won his 12Th game and he now has a 3.70 ERA.

Goofballs:

**Indians Offense- 4 runs on 12 hits, leaving 9 men on base. Not getting that big hit to give them the lead.

**Mark Lowe, Seattle Mariners- Blew the lead, giving up 4 runs (2 earned), he walked 1 and didn't strike anyone out. Mark now has a 3.38 ERA. Mark now has 6 losses on the year too.

**Nationals Offense- 3 runs on 10 hits, leaving 9 men on base.

**Diamondbacks Offense- Scoring just 1 run, and collecting 4 hits, they did not walk, and struck out 8 times.

**Brewers Offense- 2 runs on only 6 hits, walking 2 and struck out 7 times.

**Francisco Cordero, Cincinnati Reds- Cordero lost the game, he only threw 2/3 of an inning, giving up 3 runs (3 earned), he walked 1, struck out 1 and now has a 2.30 ERA.

**Derek Lowe, Atlanta Braves- Derek got hammered hard in the 4Th inning, he lasted 3 2/3 innings, giving up 8 runs (earned), not walking anyone or striking anyone out. Derek lost his 8Th game and he now has a 4.45 ERA.

**Casey Janssen, Toronto Blue Jays- Lost the game for the Jays and his 1st error of the season cost his team the game. He threw 1 inning, giving up 3 runs (1 earned), he walked 1, and struck out 2. Casey now has a 6.04 ERA, losing his 4Th game of the year.

**Jason Berken, Baltimore Orioles- Lost his 11Th game of the season, he threw 5 2/3 innings, giving up 5 runs (5 earned), didn't walk anyone and struck out 3. Jason gave up 3 Home Runs that ultimately cost his team the game and he now has a 6.72 ERA.

**Astros Offense- They could only score 2 runs, 3 hits, 0 walks, and 10 strikeouts. Nolasco owned the Astros hitters.

**Jason Jennings, Texas Rangers- Jason threw 1 1/3 innings, giving up 3 runs (3 earned), he walked 1, struck out 1, and he gave up 2 Home Runs, losing the game and he now has a 3.97 ERA.

**White Sox Offense- 4 runs on 8 hits with 6 walks, leaving 10 men on base, and ruining any chances of winning the game.

**Cubs Offense- Couldn't get the big clutch hit to give them any leads. They scored 3 runs on 7 hits, 5 walks, and they left 8 men on base.

**Jay Marshall, Oakland Athletics-Lost his 1st game of the season by throwing just 1/3 of an inning, giving up 4 runs (4 earned), he now has a 9.82 ERA.

**Cardinals Offense- Only collecting 5 hits and 3 runs, they didn't offer many chances of coming back against the Dodgers.

Around the MLB on Wednesday

The Nationals are about to fire interim GM Mike Rizzo and replace with Diamondbacks vice president Jerry DiPoto.

The Astors are not planning on trading any more players before the August 31st waiver deadline.

The Dodgers are close to signing P Vincente Padilla.

The Athletics are looking for starting pitching because they don't want to put a lot of innings on their rookies.
