John Smoltz refuses minor league assignment that the Red Soz ask him. Now the Red Sox can trade him or release him. Either way the Red Sox will have to pay most of his salary.
The Rays lost 2 pitchers off waivers. The Indians claimed 26 year old R.J. Swindle and the Pirates claimed 25 year old John Meloan.
Gary Sheffield and Pedro Feliciano were claimed by an unknown team to be pulled back by the Mets. Sheffield can not be traded due to injusy but Feliciano still has a chance.
P Sidney Ponson becomes a free agent when the Royals obtained release on waivers.
