B & G's 8/14/09

Baseballs:

**Derek Lee, Chicago Cubs- Derek finished the day 3-3 and drove in 7 runs, he walked and had 2 doubles. Derek is now hitting .290 with 81 RBIs.

**Josh Johnson, Florida Marlins- Johnson threw 7 1/3 innings, giving up 1 run (1 earned), he walked 3 and struck out 11. Josh now has a 2.85 ERA, winning his 12Th game of the season.

**Felix Pie, Baltimore Orioles- Felix hit for the cycle, a double, single, triple, and a Home Run, his 3rd Home Run of the season, and he drove in 4 runs, giving him 15 on the season. Felix after his 4-5 evening is now hitting .254.

**Garrett Mock, Washington Nationals- Garrett threw 6 shutout innings, he walked 4 and struck out 6. Mock won his 2Nd game and now has a 5.27 ERA.

**Brandon Inge, Detroit Tigers- Brandon hit a walk off Home Run, his 23rd of the season, driving in his 65Th run. Brandon is now hitting .250 after a 1-4 evening.

**Bobby Parnell, New York Mets- Making his 2Nd Major League start, he threw 6 shutout innings, he didn't walk anyone and struck out 7. Bobby now has a 3.50 ERA and won his 3rd game.

**Ryan Howard, Philadelphia Phillies- Ryan hit the go ahead Home Run, his 28Th of the season, driving in his 86Th run of the season. Ryan finished up 1-3 with a walk and he is hitting .266.

**Roy Halladay, Toronto Blue Jays- Roy threw 8 strong innings, giving up 2 runs (1 earned), he didn't walk anyone and struck out 6, winning his 13 game and has a 2.65 ERA.

**Ryan Braun, Milwaukee Brewers- Ryan went 2-4 with a walk and hit 2 Home Runs, giving him 25 on the season, he drove in 3 runs, giving him 84 RBIs. Ryan is now hitting .315.

**Jason Kubel, Minnesota Twins- Jason went 3-4 with 5 RBIs and a Home Run, his 20Th of the season. Kubel now has 68 RBIs and is hitting .312 on the season.

**Victor Martinez, Boston Red Sox- Victor hit a big clutch double to give the Red Sox the lead for good. He went 1-3 with 2 walks and drove in 2 runs, giving him 77 RBIs on the season. Victor is now hitting .284.

**Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals- Adam threw 7 shutout innings, he didn't walk anyone and struck out 3. Adam also hit his 2Nd Home Run of the season, he drove in his 4Th run and is now hitting .164 and has a 2.62 ERA, winning his 14Th game.

**Dan Haren, Arizona Diamondbacks- Dan threw 8 strong innings, giving up 1 run (1 earned), he walked 2 and struck out 8. Dan lowered his ERA to 2.50 and won his 12Th game of the year.

**Alexi Ramirez, Chicago White Sox- Alexi went 2-5 at the plate and hit his 14Th Home Run of the season, driving in his 53rd RBI. Ramirez is hitting .274.

**Mark Teixeira, New York Yankees- Mark hit his 30Th Home Run of the season to give the Yankees the lead in the 9Th inning. Mark has 86 RBIs and after going 1-3 with a walk, he is hitting .288.

Goofballs:

**Charlie Morton, Pittsburgh Pirates- Charlie lasted 1+ inning, giving up 10 runs (10 earned), he walked 3 and struck out 1. Charlie now has a 5.51 ERA, losing his 6th game of the season.

**Rockies Offense- Striking out 15 and producing 4 runs on just 5 hits.

**Jered Weaver, LA Angles- Jered threw 3 1/3 innings, giving up 8 runs (8 earned), he walked 4 and struck out 3. Jered now has a 4.12 ERA.

**Royals Offense- They were shutout, only collecting 3 hits, 2 walks, and 5 strikeouts.

**Reds Offense- The Reds were shutout, getting 8 hits, they walked 4 times and struck out 8.

**Giants Offense- Were shutout and they only had 4 hits, 1 walk and 8 strikeouts.

**Braves Offense- The Braves scored 2 runs on 8 hits, 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts. The Braves left 8 men on base.

**Rays Offense- Were shut down by Doc Halladay, 2 runs on 9 hits, 0 walks, and 7 strikeouts.

**Wandy Rodriguez, Houston Astros- Wandy lasted 4 innings, giving up 10 runs (10 earned), he walked 5, struck out 4, and gave up 3 Home Runs. Wandy lost his 7Th game and he now has a 3.05 ERA.

**Justin Masterson, Cleveland Indians- Justin threw 3 1/2 innings, giving up 7 runs (6 earned), he walked 5 and struck out 3. Justin now has a 4.70 ERA.

**Frank Francisco, Texas Rangers- Blew his 3rd ave and lost the game, giving up 6 runs (6 earned) in 2/3 of an inning, he struck out 1 and now has a 3.66 ERA.

**Mat Latos, San Diego Padres- Mat threw 4 innings, giving up 7 runs (7 earned), he walked 3 and struck out 1. Mat now has a 4.01 ERA.

**Dodgers offense- 1 run on just 7 hits, 3 walks, and 9 strikeouts.

**Adam Kennedy, Oakland Athletics- Struck out 3 times, going 0-5. Adam is now hitting .280.

**Mariners Offense- 2 runs on 7 hits, but 12 strikeouts, not getting the big hits to score more runs.

The Red Sox Acquired Alex Gonzalez...

Update 3:00 Ken Rosenthal hears the Reds are sending over 1.1 million.

Update 2:40: The Reds are sending cash to the Red Sox to help pay for the 5.4 million salary that Alex Gonzalez still has on his contract.

Update 1:25: Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports the Red Sox are sending 23 year minor leaguer Kris Negron to the Reds for Alex Gonzalez.

Update 1:15: Tony Massarotti reports the Red Sox and Reds have complete the deal but no announcement has been made official.

Update 1:05: Peter Gammons says the Red Sox and Reds are finalizing the deal.

**Josh Hamilton, Texas Rangers- It was "The Josh Hamilton Show" today, he finished 4-4 with 2 doubles, and 2 RBIs, giving him 37 RBIs. Josh is now hitting .260.

**Gil Meche, Kansas City Royals- Gil gave the Royals a big lift, making his 1st start since July 11Th. He lasted 5 innings, giving up 4 runs (4 earned), he walked 2 and struck out 2. Gil now has a 4.69 ERA.

**Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers- Justin gave his team a big lift and a big win against the Boston red Sox. Justin went 8 innings, giving up 1 run (1 earned), he walked 1 and struck out 8. Justin now has a 3.28 ERA, winning his 13Th game.

**Prince Fielder, Milwaukee Brewers- Prince hit a towering Home Run that hasn't even landed yet. Very impressive, he finished up 2-4 with 2 Home Runs and a walk. Prince now has 29 Home Runs, 102 RBIs and a .308 average.

**Cliff Lee, Philadelphia Phillies- Cliff threw 8 fantastic innings, giving up 1 run (1 earned), he walked 3 and struck out 8. Cliff won his 10Th game and now has a 2.86 ERA.

**Jason Marquis, Colorado Rockies- Jason threw 7 solid innings, giving up 1 run (1 earned), he walked 3 and struck out 6. Jason now has a 3.55 ERA, winning his 13Th game of the season.

**Sean West, Florida Marlins- 6 solid innings, giving up 1 run (1 earned), he didn't walk anyone and struck out 3. Sean won his 4Th game and now has a 4.57 ERA.

**Jonny Gomes, Cincinnati Reds- Jonny is the hero of the day, he finished up 3-4 with 3 Home Runs, giving him 14, giving him 5 RBIs and now he has 33 RBIs. Jonny now is hitting .271.

**Hedeki Matsui, New York Yankees- Hedeki went 4-5 at the plate, hitting 2 Home Runs, giving him 19 Home Runs, and after driving in 5 runs, he has 58. Hedeki is now hitting .269.

Goofballs:

**Indians Offense- 1 run today on 8 hits, 2 walks, and 12 strikeouts. They had many chances to get that big hit to turn things around, only to get out of it.

**Twins Offense- They left 9 men on base, scoring 4 runs on 7 hits.

**Red Sox offense- They were shutout this afternoon, walking 1 time and striking out 9 times with only 4 hits.

**Cesar Carillo, San Diego Padres- Made his Major League debut and the Brewers gave him a rather brutal beating. 2 1/3 innings, giving up 8 runs (8 earned), he walked 2, struck out 1 and gave up 3 Home Runs. Cesar now has a 30.86 ERA with his 1st loss.

**Cubs Offense- The Cubs were swept and in part due to their offense. 1 run on 6 hits just never gets it done, as a team they struck out 10 times.

**Garrett Jones, Pittsburgh Pirates- Garrett went 0-4 with 4 strikeouts. He is hitting .288.

**Chris Sampson, Houston Astros- Chris threw 2/3 of an inning, giving up 6 runs (6 earned)he walked 2 and didn't strike anyone out. Chis now has a 5.04 ERA.

**Nationals Offense- 0 runs with 2 hits. One word...ugly.

**Ian Snell- Making his 3rs start for the Mariners, he was good his 1st start, but horrible his last 2 starts. Tonight, he threw 6 innings, giving up 8 runs (8 earned), he walked 3 and struck out 4. Ian now has a 5.84 ERA, losing his 9Th game.

Baseballs:

**Cory Sullivan, New York Mets- The new lead off hitter went 2-4 at the plate with 2 triples. He drove in his 5Th run, he is hitting .269 on the season.

**Juan Uribe, San Francisco Giants- Juan hit a walk off Home Run, his 5Th of the season to give the Giants a 4-2 win. Uribe now has 26 RBIs and he went 2-5 and is hitting .280.

**Josh Hamilton, Texas Rangers- Josh went 3-4 and drove in 2 runs to aid Tommy Hunter shutting out the Indians. He now has 35 RBIs and is hitting .248.

**Robinson Cano, New York Yankees- Cano got a walk off RBI, and with his 2 RBIs, he has 60 on the season. Cano finished up 2-5 and is hitting .317.

**Adam Larouche, Atlanta Braves- Adam went 2-3 with a walk and hit 2 Home Runs, he drove in 3 runs, giving him 50 RBIs and 16 Home Runs. Adam is hitting .259.

**Cliff Pennington, Oakland Athletics- Cliff went 3-3 with a walk and a double. He is hitting .326.

**Howie Kendrick, LA Angels- Howie hit a big 3 run Home Run to lift the Angels to a 6 run lead, his 7Th shot of the show. How, with his 3 runs now has 41 RBIs. Howie is now hitting .273.

**Hunter Pence, Houston Astros- Hunter went 2-5 with 2 Home Runs, his 15Th and 16Th of the season and he drove in a career high 6 runs, giving him 52 RBIs. Hunter is now hitting .291.

**Josh Beckett, Boston Red Sox- Josh threw 7 strong innings, giving up 2 runs (2 earned), he walked 1 and struck out 6. Beckett now has a 3.10 ERA, earning his Major League leading 14Th win.

**Phillies Offense- As a collective team, they scored 12 runs on 14 hits, 3 doubles, 2 triples, and 3 Home Runs. Just an overall good night that helped Pedro Martinez get his 1st win as a Phillie.

**Francisco Liriano, Minnesota Twins- 7 strong innings, giving up 1 run (1 earned), he walked 1 and struck out 8. Francisco won his 5Th game and now has a 5.39 ERA.

**Kevin Kouzmanoff, San Diego Padres- Kevin went 3-4 at the plate and he drove in 2 runs, giving him 63 RBIs. Kevin is now hitting .263.

**Chris Carpenter, St. Louis Cardinals- Chris threw 7 strong innings, giving up 2 runs (2 earned), he didn't walk anyone and struck out 10, lowering his ERA to 2.27 and won his 12Th game.

**Ubaldo Jimenez, Colorado Rockies- 8 scoreless innings, walking 4 and struck out 6. Jimenez won his 10Th game and he has a 3.47 ERA.

**Ken Griffey, Jr, Seattle Mariners- Griffey hit the walk off single to drive in the only run to win the game in the 14Th inning. Griffey now has 38 RBIs and is hitting .226.

Goofballs:

**Diamondbacks Defense- Stephen Drew (8Th) and Mark Reynolds (19Th) both made errors, costing the Mets to score 2 unearned runs off of them.

**Guillermo Mota, Los Angeles Dodgers- Gave up the walk off Home Run, giving up 2 runs (2 earned) in 1/3 of an inning. He walked 1 and now has a 3.72 ERA.

**Indians Offense- They were awful, having some bad at bats. 0 runs on only 6 hits, 0 walks and 8 strikeouts.

**Blue Jays Offense- 3 runs on 14 hits, giving them many chances to score more runs, but they couldn't get the job done, leaving 14 men on base.

**Sean Burnett, Washinton Nationals- Gave up 3 runs (3 earned) in 1 inning, he walked 2 and didn't strike anyone out. Sean now has a 3.12 ERA.

**Orioles Offense- 3 runs scored on 9 hits, 2 walks, and 4 strikeouts.

**Randy Choate, Tampa Bay Rays- Randy threw 1/3 of an inning, giving up 4 runs (4 earned), he walked 1 and didn't strike anyone out. Choate now has a 3.92 ERA.

**Ricky Nolasco, Florida Marlins- Ricky lasted 3 1/3 innings, giving up 10 runs (10 earned), he walked 2 and struck out 1. Ricky now has a 5.44 ERA.

**Tigers Offense- They scored 2 runs and only collected 3 hits, 1 walk and 10 strikeouts.

**Sean Marshall, Chicago Cubs- I could give this to Jeff Samardzja, who got tattooed in his 1st Major League start, but Sean's job is to go out and keep his team in the game. He didn't do it, he threw 3 1/3 innings, giving up 5 runs (5 earned), he walked 3 and struck out 4. Sean now has a 4.35 ERA and he gave up 2 Home Runs.

**Royals Offense- 1 run scored, on 4 hits, 1 walk, and 12 strikeouts.

**Todd Coffee, Milwaukee Brewers- Only lasted 2/3 of an inning, giving up 3 runs (3 earned), he walked 1 and didn't strike anyone out. Todd lost the game and now has a 2.61 ERA.

**Reds Offense- 2 runs on 9 hits, 1 walk, and 11 strikeouts. They had no answer for Carpenter or the Cardinals.

**Pirates Offense- They got shutout again, could only get 4 hits. In fact they walked more (5) than they had hits (4). Rough night for the Buckos.

**White Sox Offense- 0 runs in the game with 10 hits and 6 walks. They certainly had their chances in the game.

Around the MLB on Thursday...

The Brewers have claimed P Doug Davis but both teams say a deal is unlikely.

The Marlins have interest in P John Smoltz.

P Justin Duchscherer may Return Tuesday against the Yankees. That will be his first game of the season.

White Sox C A.J. Pierzynski wants to stay with the White Sox when his deal expires after next season.

The Nationals and first round pick number 1 overall Stephen Strasburg contract talks will go down to the wire.

The Indians and first round pick Alex Smith is seeking top 5 money and the Indians are worry of giving that to him.

The Royals offer top pick Aaron Crow 3 million only to hear he wants more money.

The White Sox acquired IF Andy Cannizaro from the Indians for cash. Cannizaro was assigned to Triple A.

Jayson Stark hears Andy Sonnanstine and Jeff Niemann were claimed on waivers and quickly pulled back by the Rays.

Baseballs:

**Aaron Laffey, Cleveland Indians- Aaron won his 6Th game by throwing 6 2/3 scoreless innings. He had a rough 1st inning, but after that, he settled down and had a nice flow. He walked 3 and struck out 2, Aaron now has a 3.25 ERA.

**Tommy Hanson, Atlanta Braves- Tommy dominated the Nationals offense, he threw 6 2/3 innings, giving up 1 run (1 earned), he didn't walk anyone and struck out 9. Tommy won his 7Th game and now has a 3.05 ERA.

**Dan Uggla, Florida Marlins- Dan went 3-5 and hit a walk off single to drive in the winning run, he drove in 2 runs for the night, he has 60 RBIs. Dan is now hitting .240.

**Jorge Posada, New York Yankees- Posada went 2-4 and he hit his 15Th Home Run to put the Yankees ahead for good. He drove in 2 runs, giving him 52 RBIs. Posada is now hitting .283.

**Brian Roberts, Baltimore Orioles- Brian went 3-4 at the plate, he stole 2 bases and hit a double. Brian drove in his 47Th run and is now hitting .286.

**Mike Lowell, Boston Red Sox- Mike came in to the game because Kevin Youkilis got thrown out for fighting. He responded by going 2-3 with 2 Home Runs, giving him 13 on the season, he drove in 3 runs, giving him 57 RBIs. Mike also scored 3 runs and he is hitting .297.

**Ben Francisco, Philadelphia Phillies- Big Ben had a 1-5 evening, but that 1 hit was big. Ben gave the Phillies the lead for good in the 12Th inning with his 12Th Home Run of the season, he has 37 RBIs. Ben is hitting .251 on the year.

**Adrian Gonzales, San Diego Padres- Adrian had a career night going 6-6, he drove in 3 runs, giving him 67 RBIs on the season. Adrian is now hitting .262.

**Miguel Olivo, Kansas City Royals- Olivo went 3-5 with his 16Th Home Run, he drove in 3 runs, giving him 42 RBIs. Miguel is now hitting .246.

**Alex Gonzales, Cincinnati Reds- Alex went 4-5 at the plate and drove in his 26Th run of the season. Alex is now hitting .217.

**Andrew McCutcheon, Pittsburgh Pirates- Andrew went 1-3 with 3 walks, he stole 3 bases and scored 3 runs. He is now hitting .293.

**Ervin Santana, LA Angels- Santana threw a complete game shutout, a 3 hitter against the Rays. He walked 2 and struck out 6. Santana now has a 6.38 ERA.

**Trent Oeltjen, Arizona Diamondbacks- Trent had a career night, a short career night, going 4-4 with a double and a triple. Trent is now hitting .500 on the season.

**Alexei Ramirez, Chicago White Sox- Alexei went 1-3 and hit his 13Th Home Run of the season, he drove in 3 runs, giving him 52 RBIs. Ramirez also walked and he is hitting .274.

**Manny Ramirez, Los Angeles Dodgers- Manny went 2-3 with 2 walks and he hit his 13Th Home Run of the season, driving in 3 runs, giving him 44 RBIs. Manny is hitting .319.

Goofballs:

**Rangers Offense- They were shutout for the 6Th time this season, only collected 7 hits, 3 walks, and 6 strikeouts.

**Adam Dunn, Washington Nationals- Adam struck out 4 times, leading the offense with a combined 13 strikeouts.

**Wesley Wright, Houston Astros- Wesley lost the game, his 2Nd of the season. He threw 2/3 of an inning, giving up 1 run (1 earned), he walked 3 and struck out 2. Wright now has a 5.97 ERA.

**Jesse Carlson, Toronto Blue Jays- Jesse lost the game and blew the save opportunity. He worked 1/3 of an inning, giving up 3 runs (3 earned). He gave up back to back Home Runs that gave the Yankees the lead for good, losing his 5Th game of the season. Jesse now has a 5.40 ERA.

**Athletics Offense- 2 runs on 7 hits, they walked 2 times and struck out 8. Oakland couldn't get the clutch hit, they left 7 men on base.

**Chris Lambert, Detroit Tigers- Came into the game after Portello hit Youkilis and the Red Sox punished him. 5 innings, giving up 5 runs (5 earned), he walked 4 and struck out 3. Chris now has a 14.85 ERA.

**Cubs Offense- 3 runs on 10 hits with 7 walks and 10 strikeouts. The Cubs left 12 men on base and they had their chances, but couldn't get that big hit.

**Mark DiFelice, Milwaukee Brewers- Mike threw 2/3 of an inning, giving up 3 runs (3 earned), he didn't walk anyone and struck out 1. Mark now has a 3.40 ERA.

**Nick Blackburn, Minnesota Twins- Nick lasted 1 2/3 innings, giving up 6 runs (4 earned), he walked 2 and didn't strike anyone out. Nick lost his 7Th game and he now has a 3.99 ERA.

**Cardinals Offense- 4 runs on 15 hits, so they certainly had their chances for a big key hit to give them the lead.

**Jhoulys Chacin, Colorado Rockies- The young kid struggled, throwing 2 2/3 innings, giving up 4 runs (4 earned), he walked 6 and only gave up 1 hit, so that hurt him. He struck out 1 and now has a 5.87 ERA.

**Rays Offense- The team only had 3 hits and were shutout. They walked 2 times and struck out 6.

**Mets Offense- The Mets scored 2 runs on 8 hits, 1 walk, and 10 strikeouts.

**David Aardsma, Seattle Mariners- David blew the save and he threw 2/3 of an inning, giving up 3 runs (3 earned), he walked 1 and didn't strike anyone out. David now has a 2.04 ERA.

**Giants Offense- Had no answers against the Dodgers pitching, 1 run on 4 hits, they walked 1 and struck out 3 times.

Around the MLB...

John Smoltz refuses minor league assignment that the Red Soz ask him. Now the Red Sox can trade him or release him. Either way the Red Sox will have to pay most of his salary.

The Rays lost 2 pitchers off waivers
. The Indians claimed 26 year old R.J. Swindle and the Pirates claimed 25 year old John Meloan.

Gary Sheffield and Pedro Feliciano were claimed by an unknown team to be pulled back by the Mets. Sheffield can not be traded due to injusy but Feliciano still has a chance.

P Sidney Ponson becomes a free agent when the Royals obtained release on waivers.

1 executive calls the Alex Rios trade a gamble at 60 million but if it was 30-35 million that is good deal.

The Diamondbacks waited to send pitchers Jon Garland and Doug Davis through waivers.

Miguel Tejada was on waivers them was pulled back by the Astros.

Some are questioning why the Jays didn't make a better effort by trading relief pitchers Scott Downs and Jason Frazer and also free agent to be SS Marco Scutaro.

2 NL Teams have shown interest in pitcher Vincente Padilla but no names.

The Nationals search for a GM could be completed by the end of the month. Mark Rizzo acting GM is getting a lot of compliments for trading for OF Nyjer Morgan.

Most executives believe P John Smoltz will end up in the NL.

Brewers Rumors...

After the firing of Casto and the demotion of Hardy the Brewers DFA Bill Hall. The Brewers are going to have to pay 6.8M this year, 8.4M next year if released. Hall also had a club option for 2011 which he makes 9.25M.

Today the Brewers fired pitching coach Bill Castro and demoted SS J.J. Hardy to Triple A. They also call up 1 of there top prospects SS Alcides Escobar.

Also the Brewers continue to look for a starter off waivers.

Lets just see if they make any more moves today as they continue to fall down in the standings.
