Around the MLB...

John Smoltz refuses minor league assignment that the Red Soz ask him. Now the Red Sox can trade him or release him. Either way the Red Sox will have to pay most of his salary.

The Rays lost 2 pitchers off waivers
. The Indians claimed 26 year old R.J. Swindle and the Pirates claimed 25 year old John Meloan.

Gary Sheffield and Pedro Feliciano were claimed by an unknown team to be pulled back by the Mets. Sheffield can not be traded due to injusy but Feliciano still has a chance.

P Sidney Ponson becomes a free agent when the Royals obtained release on waivers.

1 executive calls the Alex Rios trade a gamble at 60 million but if it was 30-35 million that is good deal.

The Diamondbacks waited to send pitchers Jon Garland and Doug Davis through waivers.

Miguel Tejada was on waivers them was pulled back by the Astros.

Some are questioning why the Jays didn't make a better effort by trading relief pitchers Scott Downs and Jason Frazer and also free agent to be SS Marco Scutaro.

2 NL Teams have shown interest in pitcher Vincente Padilla but no names.

The Nationals search for a GM could be completed by the end of the month. Mark Rizzo acting GM is getting a lot of compliments for trading for OF Nyjer Morgan.

Most executives believe P John Smoltz will end up in the NL.

Brewers Rumors...

After the firing of Casto and the demotion of Hardy the Brewers DFA Bill Hall. The Brewers are going to have to pay 6.8M this year, 8.4M next year if released. Hall also had a club option for 2011 which he makes 9.25M.

Today the Brewers fired pitching coach Bill Castro and demoted SS J.J. Hardy to Triple A. They also call up 1 of there top prospects SS Alcides Escobar.

Also the Brewers continue to look for a starter off waivers.

Lets just see if they make any more moves today as they continue to fall down in the standings.

The Angles are still looking to upgrade the rotation and have no budget limitations.

The Rangers have claimed cheap bats off waivers but no word on who.

The Rockies are still looking for a bat off the bench and a reliever.

Aaron Harang and Bronson Arroyo of the Reds has cleared waivers and can be dealt to any team.

The Dodgers and Rangers are eying John Smoltz among other teams as well. Smoltz was DFA by the Red Sox last week and was already said that he cleared waivers and now can be dealt to any team.

Indians GM Mark Shapiro could take a seat upstairs while Chris Antonetti, his right-hand man, takes over as general manager. GM Mark Shapiro said he has every intention of returning next season and he also said I definitely feel I have unfinished business as a general manager

Tampa Bay Rays closer Troy Percival who is leaning toward retirement said "he's done unless something miraculous happens.

Mets relief pitcher Billy Wagner is expected to return Sunday. That will be his frist game of the 2009 season.

Draft Pick Signings and News...

The Diamondbacks sign 41 overall pick SS Chris Owings to 950K and they also sign 13th round pick LHP Patrick Schuster to 450K.

The Brewers sign fifth round pick D'Vontrey Richardson to 400K.

The Giants sign fifth round pick Matthew Graham to 500K.

News on players yet to be sign as the draft signing deadline creeps closer:

The Indians are keeping contact with top pick Alex Smith.

The Padres are inching closer to signing top pick Donavan Tate.

The Diamondbacks are making progress with top pick Bobby Borchering.

The Blue Jays have not sign any of there first 5 pick and GM J.P. Ricciardi believes they will sign.

Baseball Notes

  • D'Backs released reliever Tom Gordon, who pitched 1.2 innings this year before being put on the DL with a hammy injury.
  • Brewers GM Doug Melvin tells us that SS J.J. Hardy has not been placed on waivers.
  • The Angels have released righty Justin Speier.

Baseballs:

**John Baker, Florida Marlins- John went 2-4 with a double and drive in 2 runs, giving him 34 RBIs. John is now hitting .276.

**Lyle Overbay, Toronto Blue Jays- Lyle went 2-3 with a walk and hit his 12Th Home Run of the season, driving in his 45Th run. Lyle is now hitting .264.

**Mark Ellis, Oakland Athletics- Mark went 5-5 and drove in 4 runs, giving him 35 RBIs. Mark had a double and is hitting .270.

**Nick Green, Boston Red Sox- Nick drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly. He drove in 2 runs after a 1-3 evening. He is hitting .239 with 34 RBIs.

**Kyle Lohse, St. Louis Cardinals- 6 strong inning to earn his 1st win in over 2 1/2 months. He gave up 1 run (1 earned), he didn't walk anyone and struck out 3. Kyle now has a 4.34 ERA.

**Troy Tulowitsky, Colorado Rockies- Troy hit for the cycle, and he finished up 5-5 and drove in 7 runs. He now has 21 Home Runs and 60 RBIs. Troy is now hitting .276

**Doug Davis, Arizona Diamondbacks- 7 strong innings, giving up 2 runs (2 earned), he walked 3 and struck out 2. Doug won his 7Th game and now has a 3.62 ERA.

**Vladimir Guerrero, LA Angels- Guerrero hit 2 Home Runs, giving him 8 on the season. He went 2-4 and drove in 2 runs, giving him 25 on the season. Vlad is hitting .299.

**Matt Kemp, Los Angeles Dodgers- Matt hit a big 3 run double, giving the Dodgers the lead for good. He finished off 1-4 and has 72 RBIs. Matt is hitting .314.

**Kenji Johjima, Seattle Mariners- Kenji got a big hit, a 2 run Home Run, his 4Th of the season, he now has 14 RBIs. Kenji is hitting .252 on the season.

Goofballs:

**Chris Sampson, Houston Astros- Chris gave up 3 runs (3 earned) in 2 innings, he walked 3 and didn't strike anyone out. Chris now has a 4.28 ERA.

**Nick Swisher, New York Yankees- Struck out 3 times.

**Jeremy Guthrie, Baltimore Orioles- Jeremy threw 4 2/3 innings, giving up 5 runs (5 earned), he walked 1 and struck out 2. Guthrie now has a 5.43 ERA, losing his 12Th game.

**Tigers Offense- They did come back, but couldn't do enough. 5 runs, on 10 hits, and they left 8 men on base.

**Reds Offense- 1 run on 6 hits, 0 walks and 3 strikeouts.

**Tom Gorzelanny, Chicago Cubs- Tom only threw 1 1/3 innings, giving up 6 runs (6 earned), he didn't walk anyone and struck out 1. Tom now has a 6.23 ERA and gave up 2 Home Runs.

**Mets Offense- 4 runs on 9 hits, they left 7 men on base and couldn't get things going until the 9Th inning.

**B.J. Upton, Tampa Bay Rays- He is sulking over being dropped to hitting 9Th, but guess what? B.J. is having a horrible season, injured or not. He struck out 3 times and went 0-4 again. Upton is hitting .237 on the season.

**Giants Offense- They only scored 2 runs on 9 hits, they didn't walk anyone and struck out 3 against their division rivals.

**Jim Thome, Chicago White Sox- Jim struck out 3 times and finished up 0-4. He is hitting .252.

Corners Market

As we know yesterday afternoon the White Sox acquired Alex Rios from the Jays as straight waiver claim, so the Blue Jays will receive nothing in return. Rios (28) will be a White Sox till 2014 with an option for the 2015. GM J.P. Ricciardi had this to say:
"This allows us to get out from under a contract and do more to address our club.
Other news:
  • Brandon Webb will pitch next year, but hopes the D'Backs pick up his $8.5MM or they'll have to buy him out for $2MM.
  • Gary Sheffield said that he would prefer not to be traded, but suggested that could all change, depending on where the Mets try to deal him.
  • Olney hears that Doug Davis is currently on waivers while John Smoltz has cleared waivers.
  • Olney also hears that the Rays might listen to offers regarding B.J. Upton this off-season.

B & G's 8/9/09

Baseballs:

**Placido Polanco, Detroit Tigers- Polanco went 3-5 at the plate and drove in his 52Nd run late in the game to give the Tigers the lead for good. He is hitting .276.

**Ryan Zimmerman, Washington Nationals- Ryan helped the Nationals win their 8Th straight game. He finished up 3-5 with 3 runs scored and 2 doubles. Ryan is hitting .306 on the season.

**Hanley Ramirez, Florida Marlins- The All Star Shortstop went 4-6 at the plate and drove in 3 runs with a double. Ramirez is now hitting .348 with 74 RBIs.

**Skip Schumaker, St. Louis Cardinals- Skip hit a Home Run, his 4Th of the season to get the ball rolling for the Cardinals in the 8Th inning. He now has 28 RBIs and after a 1-2 afternoon, he is hitting .294.

**Marco Scutaro, Toronto Blue Jays- Marco set the tone early, he finished up 4-5, including hitting his 10Th Home Run of the season, driving in 2 runs, he now has 49 RBIs and is hitting .300.

**Jamey Carroll, Cleveland Indians- Jamey gave the Indians a big lift, he went 2-5, including hitting his 2Nd Home Run of the season, he drove in 3 runs, giving him 20 RBIs. Jamey is now hitting .295.

**Wandy Rodriguez, Houston Astros- 7 shutout innings for Wandy, he walked 2 and struck out 3. Wandy won his 11Th game and now has a 2.51 ERA.

**Bobby Crosby, Oakland Athletics- Bobby hit 2 Home Runs, giving him 6 on the season and he drove in 2 runs, giving him 27 RBIs. Crosby finished up 2-4 and is now hitting .227.

**Todd Helton, Colorado Rockies- Todd extended his hitting streak to 14 and he finished up 3-4 with 2 doubles and he drove in 2 runs, giving him 65 RBIs. Todd is now hitting .323.

**Derek Holland, Texas Rangers- Derek threw a complete game shutout, throwing a 3 hitter, he walked 1 and struck out 8. Derek won his 5Th game and has a 5.04 ERA.

**Johan Santana, New York Mets- Johan pitched very well and he contributed with the bat. He went 2-3 with his 4Th RBI. Santana is hitting .158, and he threw 8 fantastic innings, giving up 1 run (1 earned), he walked 2 and struck out 4. Johan won his 13Th game and now has a 3.00 ERA.

**Russell Branyan, Seattle Mariners- Russell went 1-4, but that 1 hit was meaningful. He hit a grand slam Home Run, his 26Th of the season. He drove in 4 runs, giving him 66 RBIs and is now hitting .255.

**Aaron Harang, Cincinnati Reds- Harang threw 7 strong innings, giving up 2 runs (2 earned) and he the Reds gave him some run support too, winning his 6Th game of the year. He walked 2 and struck out 7, Harang now has a 4.43 ERA.

**Matt Diaz, Atlanta Braves- Matt went 3-4 and hit his 6Th Home Run of the season, driving in 2 runs, giving him 31 RBIs. Matt is now hitting .292.

**Mark Teixeira, New York Yankees- Mark went 2-4 and hit his 29Th Home Run of the season, driving in his 86Th run, giving the Yankees the lead for good after Johnny Damon had tied the game with a Home Run himself. Mark is now hitting .286.

Goofballs:

**Matt Guerrier, Minnesota Twins- Lost the game, he gave up 2 runs (2 earned) in 1 inning, he walked 1 and struck out 1. Matt lost his 1st game and now has a 2.28 ERA.

**Scott Schoenweis, Arizona Diamondbacks- Scott only threw 2/3 of an inning, giving up 4 runs (4 earned). He now has a 8.24 ERA.

**Rodrigo Lopez, Philadelphia Phillies- 2/3 of an inning, giving up 6 runs (6 earned), he walked 3 and didn't strike anyone out. Lopez now has a 5.70 ERA.

**Matt Capps, Pittsburgh Pirates- Blew his 3rd game and lost his 7Th game. Matt didn't retire anyone, giving up 2 runs (2 earned), he didn't walk anyone or struck out anyone. Matt now has a 5.97 ERA.

**Brian Matusz, Baltimore Orioles- Brian lasted only 2 2/3 innings, giving up 5 runs (5 earned), he walked 2, and struck out 1. What hurt him though was giving up 3 Home Runs. Brian now has a 7.04 ERA and lost his 1st game.

**Scott Linebrink, Chcago White Sox- Scott gave up 3 runs (3 earned) in 1 1/3 innings, he walked 1 and didn't strike anyone out. Linebrink now has a 3.20 ERA.

**Brewers Offense- Was shutout in the afternoon. They only had 7 hits, walked 3 times and struck out 5. The Brewers left 12 men on base.

**Royals Offense- 3 runs on 9 hits, only 2 walks, and 6 strikeouts. They left 6 men on base and didn't have many opportunities to get that big hit.

**Jeff Stevens, Chicago Cubs- Jeff threw an inning, giving up 4 runs (4 earned), he walked 1 and struck out 2. Jeff now has a 7.36 ERA.

**Angels Defense- 3 errors cost 2 unearned runs to score early in the game. Bobby Abreau (6Th) and Jeff Mathis committed 2 errors (3rd and 4Th). Getting shutout didn't help matters either.

**Padres Offense- They only scored 1 run on 6 hits, 2 walks, and 5 strikeouts.

**Scott Kazmir, Tampa Bay Rays- Scott threw 4 1/3 innings, giving up 7 runs (7 earned), he walked 2 and struck out 3. Scott now has a 6.50 ERA and lost his 7Th game.

**Giants Offense- 2 runs on only 7 hits, 0 RBIs.

**Ramon Troncoso, Los Angeles Dodgers- Ramon threw just 1/3 of an inning, giving up 4 runs (4 earned), putting the game out of reach. He walked 1 and didn't strike anyone out. Ramon now has a 2.76 ERA.

**Daniel Bard, Boston Red Sox- Lost the game by giving up back to back Home Runs, losing his 1st game, giving up 3 runs (3 earned) in 2/3 of an inning. Daniel now has a 2.97.

Brew Crew Acquire Stormy Weathers

The Brewers have acquired David Weathers from the Reds for a player to be named later. Stay tuned as things develop.

Around Baseball

  • Alex Rios rumors have been crazy! We should know by Tuesday afternoon where (if at all) Rios will land (White Sox?).
  • The Rays designated both Joe Dillon and R.J. Swindle for assignment today.
  • Cubs GM Jim Hendry hinted at a waiver addition; "We'll see," said Hendry. "If we find something that makes us better, we'll try.''
  • The Yankees designated righthander Josh Towers for assignment to make room on the roster for recently acquired Chad Gaudin.
  • Do the Dodgers have moves up there sleeves? Starting rotation addition?
  • Red Sox put claim on Christian Guzman, with recent injury to Jed Lowrie.
  • The Orioles signed free agent outfielder Freddy Guzman and assigned him to AAA Norfolk.

**Adam Lind, Toronto Blue Jays- Hit a walk off double to drive in the winning run in the 10Th inning. Lind has 73 RBIs and after his 1-5 afternoon, he is hitting .297.

**C.C. Sabathia, New York Yankees- C.C. gave the Yankees bullpen a much needed rest and threw 7 2/3 scoreless innings, he walked 2 and struck out 9. C.C. won his 12Th game and now has a 3.76 ERA.

**Benji Molina, San Francisco Giants- Benji went 3-4 and hit his 13Th Home Run of the season, he drove in 3 runs, giving him 60 and is now hitting .267.

**Jared Weaver, LA Angels- Jared has now turned into the Angels ace, he threw 7 1/3 innings, giving up 2 runs (2 earned), he walked 1 and struck out 11. Jared won his 12Th game and now has a 3.73 ERA.

**Jim Thome, Chicago White Sox- Jim started the 4 run inning in the 5Th inning with a 2 run Home Run, his 21st of the season, 562Nd of his career. Thome finished the night 2-5 with a double and he is now hitting .256 with 69 RBIs.

**Prince Fielder, Milwaukee Brewers- Prince went 3-6 at the plate, including hitting his 27Th Home Run of the season, driving in 3 runs, giving him 98 RBIs. Prince is now hitting .303.

**Garrett Mock, Washington Nationals- Garrett threw 6 strong innings, giving up 2 runs (2 earned), he walked 3 and struck out 7, leading the Nationals to their season high 7Th straight win. Garrett now has a 6.14 ERA.

**Carl Pavano, Minnesota Twins- Pitching his first game as a Twin, Carl dominated the Tigers again by throwing 7 shutout innings, not walking anyone and striking out 5, winning his 10Th game of the season. Carl now has a 5.09 ERA.

**Chris Coghlan, Florida Marlins- Chris set the tone with a lead off Home Run, his 6Th of the season and he finished up 2-3 with 2 walks and drove in 2 runs, giving him 24 RBIs on the season. Chris is now hitting .277.

**Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals- Adam gave his team a big lift, he worked 6 2/3 innings, giving up 1 run (1 earned), he didn't walk anyone and struck out 6. Adam won his 13Th game and now has a 2.73 ERA.

**Zack Greinke, Kansas City Royals- Zack pitched 7 strong innings, and settled down after a rough start. He gave up 3 runs (3 earned), he walked 2 and struck out 5. Zack now has a 2.43 ERA and won his 1st game since May 26Th, his 11Th of the season.

**Kosuke Fukudome, Chicago Cubs- Fukudome went 2-4 with a walk and hit his 9Th Home Run of the season, driving in 2 runs, giving him 39 on the season. He also hit a double so he made his hits count and is now hitting .274.

**Rays Offense- 10 runs on 8 hits, with 10 walks. Just a balanced offense to make sure they didn't lose a heart breaker like Friday night.

**Mat Latos, San Diego Padres- He has emerged to become the new Padres ace, doing very well and he threw 6 innings, giving up 1 run (1 earned), he walked 3 and struck out 7. Latos now has a 2.43 ERA and 4 wins.

**Kelly Johnson, Atlanta Braves- Came in as a reserve, but he gave the Braves the only offense they needed, a 2 run shot, his 8Th of the season and he now has 26 RBIs. Kelly is hitting .226 on the year.

Goofballs:

**Ty Wigginton, Baltimore Orioles- 2 plays late in the game he should have made, including when the ball hit his glove and past him to have Joe Inglett safe at 1st, he went on to score to end the game.

**Red Sox Offense- As a team they have struggled offensively and they have been shutout the last 24 innings against the Yankees.

**Joey Votto, Cincinnati Reds- Struck out 3 times, going 0-4. Joey is hitting .320 on the season.

**Omar Vizquel & Andruw Jones- Both struck out 3 times and the entire Rangers offense struck out 13 times.

**Travis Hafner, Cleveland Indians- Hafner went 0-5 and struck out 4 times. Hafner is hitting .274 and he led the Indians offense striking out 15 times.

**Mike Hampton, Houston Astros- He left the game early, but he also set the tone for a big offensive night for the Brewers. Mike went 2 innings, giving up 3 runs (3 earned), he walked 2 and didn't strike anyone out. Mike lost his 9Th game and now has a 5.30 ERA.

**Chris Young, Arizona Diamondbacks- Chris pulled the hat trick, striking out 3 times and ended up 0-4. He is hitting .193 on the season.

**Chris Lambert, Detroit Tigers- The Tigers were shut out, but Chris gave up 6 runs (6 earned) in only 1 2/3 innings, putting the game away for good. He walked 2 and struck out 1, now he has a 32.40 ERA.

**Phillies Offense- 4 runs on 11 hits, they left 11 men on base and it proves the AL East isn't locked up yet. The Phillies only have a 5 game lead.

**Chris Bootcheck, Pittsburgh Pirates- Chris gave up 4 runs (4 earned) in the 6Th inning, he walked 3, didn't strike anyone out and now has a 36.00 ERA.

**Clayton Mortensen, Oakland Athletics- Clayton lasted 4 innings, giving up 8 runs (8 earned), he walked 3 and struck out 5. Clayton lost his 1st game and now has a 12.43 ERA.

**Rockies Offense- They had their chances, as they got to Cubs starter Ryan Dempster, but couldn't get to the Cubs bullpen. The Rockies left 6 men on base.

**Mariners Pitching- 10 walks will kill you every time, forget giving up 10 runs, they were lucky they didn't give up more.

**Mets Offense- 1 run on just 5 hits all night, walked 3 times and struck out 8. They had no answers against Latos, but they also didn't have any answers for the Padres bullpen either.

**Guillermo Mota, Los Angeles Dodgers- Mota threw 1 inning, giving up 2 runs (2 earned), he walked 2 and struck out 2. Mota lost his 3rd game and he now has a 3.29 ERA.
