Around the Bigs
End of the Week Injury Notes, and IL Report
- The Yankees have acquired Chad Gaudin from the Padres to add depth to their bullpen. The Padres will get a PTBNL in the waiver deal.
- The Padres have extended Buddy Black's deal through 2011.
- The Twins have added veteran pitcher Carl Pavano from the Indians for a PTBNL.
- The Red Sox have signed Paul Byrd.
- The Braves have signed their first round draft pick Mike Minor.
Now the injury reports from the last few days:
- Jed Lowrie of the Red Sox is having left forearm issues.
- Jake Peavy will be back in Chicago this weekend to throw a side session off a mound. He could start a minor league rehab stint on August 13 (next Thursday).
- The Arizona D'backs have placed Justin Upton on the 15 day DL with a strained right oblique. Trent Oeltjen has been called up from AAA Reno to fill the roster spot.
- Mets' starter Jonathon Niese is out for the season after tearing his hamstring.
- Jason Bay could miss the start of the series against the Yankees with a hamstring injury.
Also, Prince Fielder has been fined but not suspended for what happened in LA, and David Ortiz will have a news conference tomorrow to take about his name showing up on the list of positive PED tests from 2003.

**Trevor Crowe, Cleveland Indians- Trevor had the game winning hit, driving in his 8Th run of the season to give the Indians a 2-1 lead. Trevor is now hitting .225 and is hitting .375 since he got called back up.
**Ryan Zimmerman, Washington Nationals- Ryan finished the day 4-4 with 3 RBIs. He was a double shy of hitting the cycle. He hit his 1st triple of the season and now has 23 Home Runs with 74 RBIs. Ryan is hitting .300
**Alex Aliva, Detroit Tigers- Alex, son of Assistant General Manager Al Aliva made his Major League debut. He responded by going 2-4 with a RBI double, his 1st Major League hit. Alex is now hitting .500.
**Cliff Lee, Philadelphia Phillies- Cliff came into his new surroundings in Philadelphia and responded with 7 strong innings, giving up 1 run (1 earned), he walked 1 and struck out 9. Cliff wins his 9Th game and now has a 2.95 ERA.
**Alex Romero, Arizona Diamondbacks- Alex went 4-7 at the plate with a double and he drove in 3 runs, giving him 9 RBIs. Alex is hitting .290 this season.
**Erick Aybar, LA Angels- Erick went 3-4 at the plate and his his 4Th Home Run of the season, driving in 2 runs, giving him 41 RBIs. Aybar is now hitting .311.
**Tommy Hunter, Texas Rangers- The rookie pitched 7 strong innings, giving the Rangers a big lift. He gave up 3 runs (2 earned), walked 2 and struck out 4. Tommy won his 4Th game and a 2.63 ERA.
**Jorge Posada, New York Yankees- Jorge finished the night 3-5 with his 14Th Home Run of the season, driving in 3 runs, giving him 50 RBIs on the season. Posada is hitting .278

**Nelson Figueroa, New York Mets- He came into the game when starter Jonathan Neise was injured, Nelson gave his team a lift, throwing 4 1/3 innings of shutout ball, he didn't walk anyone and struck out 5. Nelson also got a hit at the plate. He won his 1st game of the season and now has a 6.75 ERA.
**Eli Whiteside, San Francisco Giants- Eli hit his 1st Major League Home Run, a grand slam, driving in 4 runs, giving him 7 RBIs. Eli, after going 1-4 is now hitting .226.
Tommy Hansen, Atlanta Braves-Tommy won his 6Th game by throwing 6 solid innings, giving up 2 runs (2 earned), he walked 3 and struck out 5. Tommy lowered his ERA to 3.22 and won his 6Th game.
**Aaron Laffey, Cleveland Indians- A career high 8 strong innings for Aaron, he gave up 1 run (0 earned), walking 1 and striking out 5. Aaron won his 5Th game and now has a 3.58 ERA.
**Edwin Jackson, Detroit Tigers- Edwin was superb tonight, going 8 strong innings, giving up 2 runs (2 earned), he walked 2 and struck out 8. Jackson won his 8Th game and has a 2.62 ERA.
**Johnny Damon, New York Yankees- Johnny drove in 3 runs, including hitting his 19Th Home Run of the season. Johnny is now hitting .283.
**Christian Guzman, Washington Nationals- Christian had 3 hits, just missing a Home Run in 4 at bats. He drove in 2, giving him 39 RBIs and Christian is now hitting .314.

**Russell Branyan & Jose Lopez, Seattle Mariners- Both drove in 3 runs apiece, hitting in the 2 and 3 spots respectively. Branyan had 2 hits, going 2-5 and with his 3 RBIs, he has 61 RBIs and a .263 average. Lopez, has 65 RBIs after going 3-5 and his 3 runs, he is hitting .281.
**Jim Thome, Chicago White Sox- Jim finished the night 2-4 with 2 Home Runs, giving him 20 on the season and he drove in 4 runs, giving him 66 on the season. Jim is now hitting .254.
**Braden Looper, Milwaukee Brewers- Contained the Dodgers offense, he threw 6 2/3 innings, giving up 1 run (1 earned), he walked 2 and struck out 4. Braden now has a 4.84 ERA and won his 10Th game.
**Adam Kennedy, Oakland Athletics- Adam gave his team the win with a 2 run shot, his 9Th Home Run of the season in the 6Th inning to win the game for good. Adam has 43 RBIs and is hitting .289 after a 1-4 evening.

**Kyle Lohse, St. Louis Cardinals- Kyle threw 2 2/3 innings, giving up 5 runs (5 earned), he walked 2 and didn't strike anyone out. Kyle lost his 7Th game and now has a 4.56 ERA.
**Brian Moehler, Houston Astros- Brian threw 6 innings, giving up 7 runs (6 earned), he walked 1 and struck out 5. Brian now has a 5.23 ERA.
**Chad Gaudin, San Diego Padres- Chad was awful, only throwing 3 1/3 innings, giving up 6 runs (6 earned), he walked 2 and struck out 3. Chad now has a 5.13 ERA.
**Twins Offense- Only 1 hitter had 2 hits or more, and as a team, they only collected 7 hits with 1 run.
**Orioles Offense- Had some problems scoring runs for Jeremy Guthrie, their starter. 2 runs, on 4 hits, 3 walks and 10 strikeouts.
**Aaron Hill, Toronto Blue Jays- Aaron struck out 3 times, part of the entire Jays offense striking out 11 times.
**Rick Vandenhurk, Florida Marlins- Rick lasted 4 innings, giving up 5 runs (5 earned), he walked 1, struck out 4 and gave up 3 Home Runs. Rick now has a 4.29 ERA and lost for the 1st time this season.
**Rockies Offense- Had no answers against Happ, they were shut out on only 4 hits, they walked 2 times and struck out 10.
**Brad Penny, Boston Red Sox- What hurt Brad was giving up 3 Home Runs, he survived 6 innings, giving up 5 runs (5 earned), he walked 2 and struck out 5. Brad now has a 5.20 ERA.
**Pirates Offense- 3 runs on just 5 hits, they walked 2 times and struck out 7.
**Cubs Offense- When they had a chance to go up a full game, they blew it by being shut out. They didn't even have many chances, only collecting 4 hits. The Cubs get Thursday off, and come back on Friday.
**Kyle Davies, Kansas City Royals- Kyle was dreadful, only throwing 3 2/3 innings, giving up 8 runs (8 earned), he walked 1 and struck out 2. Kyle loses for the 8Th time and he now has a 6.37 ERA.
**Angels Offense- The Angels could only score 2 runs on 6 hits, they walked 1 time and struck out 7. A rough night for the Angels.
**Dodgers Offense- The night after they scored 17 runs, the Dodgers only scored 1 run and had 5 hits. Baseball is a funny game.
**Vicente Padilla, Texas Rangers- Vicente gave up the winning run and lost his 6Th game. He threw 5 2/3 innings, giving up 6 runs (6 earned), he walked 2 and struck out 4. Padilla now has a 4.92 ERA.

Baseball Notes
- Padres payroll will increase in coming years, now that Peavy is gone. The Padres expect to gradually raise their payroll to the $70-80MM range (opening day 43 million).
- The Royals designated Ryan Freel for assignment to clear roster space for Kyle Davies; according to Bob Dutton.
- Tyler Kepner reports that the Yankees designated Cody Ransom for assignment to make room for Anthony Claggett.
- The Chicago Cubs gave B.J. Ryan his wish and release him after he fails to restore his velocity and sharpness.
- The Red Sox designated infielder Gil Velazquez for assignment.
- Yankees signed Russ Ortiz, as minor league depth.
- Red Sox signed veteran Paul Byrd to a minor league deal.
- The A's have signed righty Brett Tomko to a minor-league deal. He'll be assigned to AAA Sacramento.
- The Jays signed lefty Wilfredo Ledezma to a minor-league deal yesterday
- The Rox signed outfielder Paul McAnulty to a minor-league deal.

**Adam Dunn, Washington Nationals- Adam struck out his first 3 times at the plate, but his final at bat made up for everything, a Home Run, his 28Th shot of the season, driving in 2 runs, giving him 80 RBIs. Adam is now hitting .280.
**Brian Matucz, Baltimore Orioles- Earned his 1st Major League win by going 5 innings, giving up 1 run (1 earned), he walked 3 and struck out 5. Brian now has a 1.80 ERA.
**Carlos Gomez, Minnesota Twins- Carlos saved at least an extra base hit from Chris Gimenez shot, and his bat hurt the Indians too. He went 3-4 with his 3rd Home Run of the season, he drove in 4 runs, giving him 26 RBIs. Carlos is now hitting .240.
**Garrett Atkins, Colorado Rockies- Garrett went 2-3 with a walk. He hit his 7Th Home Run of the season, driving in 4 runs, giving him 35 RBIs. Garrett is now hitting .230.
**Yusmeiro Petit, Arizona Diamondbacks- Petit threw 8 strong inning, even throwing a no hitter into the 8Th inning. He didn't give up a run, walked 3 and struck out 4. Yusmeiro had some help from his offense so he wins for the 2Nd time and lowered his ERA to 5.81.
**Andy Pettitte, New York Yankees- Andy was fantastic against the Blue Jays, throwing 6 2/3 innings, giving up 1 run (1 earned), he walked 4 and struck out 6. Andy won for the first time in over a month and he now has a 4.35 ERA.
**Evan Longoria, Tampa Bay Rays- This kid can hit, and more importantly, he can hit in the clutch. 2 Home Runs, including the walk off in the 13Th to give his Rays the win. Evan now has 23 Home Runs, and with his 3 RBIs, he has 81 on the season. Evan is hitting .274 after a 2-6 evening.
**Tom Gorzelanny, Chicago Cubs- Tom, in his first Cubs start impressed. 7 1/3 innings, giving up 1 run (1 earned), he only walked 1 and struck out 6. Tom won his 4Th game and has a 3.38 ERA.
**Albert Pujols, St. Louis Cardinals- The best hitter in baseball had a good night, going 2-5, including hitting 2 Home Runs, one of them a Grand Slam to give his Cardinals the lead for good in the 9Th inning. He has 36 Home Runs, 97 RBIs after driving in 5 runs and he is hitting .321.
**Ichiro, Seattle Mariners- One of the best players in the game showed why he is one. He started the game with a solo shot, his 7Th of the year, and he made a fantastic catch to end the game and rob the Royals a chance to win. He finished off 2-5 with 3 runs scored and a walk. Ichiro is now hitting .364.
**Scott Podsednik, Chicago White Sox- Scott had the walk off single to give his team the win, he drove in his 33rd run of the season and finished up 2-5. Scott is hitting .303.
**Jonathan Sanchez, San Francisco Giants- Jonathan earned his 1st road victory since his no hitter he threw about a month ago. Sanchez pitched 7 shutout innings, he walked 3 and struck out 8. Jonathan lowered his ERA to 4.49 and won his 5Th game of the season.
**Martin Prado, Atlanta Braves- Prado went 3-5 at the plate and hit his 7Th Home Run of the season, he drove in 3 runs, giving him 31 RBIs and is hitting .318.
**Gio Gonzales, Oakland Athletics- Took a no hitter into the 5Th inning and finished up with 6 2/3 scoreless innings, he walked 3 and struck out 7. Gio won his 3rd game and now has a 6.31 ERA.
**Matt Kemp, Los Angeles Dodgers- Matt had another great game, going 4-5 with 5 RBIs and a Home Run, his 15Th of the season. Matt is hitting .323 and has 69 RBIs.
Goofballs:
**Dan Meyer, Florida Marlins- Dan gave up the Home Run to Dunn, he pitched 1/3 of an inning, giving up 1 run (1 earned), he now has a 2.21 ERA.
**Jarrod Washburn, Detroit Tigers- Not a good Tigers debut, he worked 5 1/3 innings, giving up 6 runs (6 earned), he walked 2 and struck out 2. Jarrod now has a 2.93 ERA.
**David Huff, Cleveland Indians- David got bad and worse, he survived 4 2/3 innings, giving up 7 runs (7 earned), he walked 1 and struck out 4. Huff now has a 6.81 ERA.
**Jamie Moyer, Philadelphia Phillies- Jamie threw 5 innings, giving up 6 runs (6 earned), he walked 4 and struck out 3. Jamie has a 5.55 ERA.
**Pirates Offense- They could only get 1 hit and didn't score any runs.
**Adam Lind, Toronto Blue Jays- Adam struck out 3 times and the entire Blue Jays offense had nothing against Pettitte.
**Josh Reddick, Boston Red Sox- Josh had a rough night striking out 4 times after his 1-5 evening. Josh is hitting .313.
**Reds Offense- Once again, their offense struggled. 3 runs on 6 hits, just 1 walk and 8 strikeouts. They did strike later in the game, but had no answer for Gorzelany.
**Pedro Feliciano, New York Mets- Gave up 3 runs (3 earned) in just 1/3 of an inning. He walked 1 and struck out 1 and now has a 3.07 ERA.
**John Bale, Kansas City Royals- John blew the save and couldn't retire anyone in the order, giving up 2 runs (2 earned) in the process. John now has a 6.75 ERA.
**Angels Offense- Only 4 runs scored with 5 hits. They did fine against Contreras, but had no answers for the White Sox bullpen.
**Astros Offense- 1 run on just 6 hits and they struck out 10.
**Edward Mujica, San Diego Padres- Edward came into the 6Th inning in what was a close game and when he left, he made things nearly impossible for the Padres. 4 runs (4 earned) in 1/3 of an inning. Edward now has a 3.65 ERA.
**Rangers Offense- Were shut out and struck out 11 times.
**Yovani Gallardo, Milwaukee Brewers- He didn't help his team that much, only lasting 5 1/3 innings, giving up 9 runs (9 earned), he walked 2 and struck out 7. Yovani now has a 3.59 ERA and lost his 8Th game.

- In exchange of minor leaguers the Pirates traded Mike Koplove to the Mariners for shortstop Deybis Benitez
- According to Geoff Baker the Mariners designated Chris Woodward for assignment today to make room for Adrian Beltre, who's coming off the DL.
- Cubans Yadel Marti, Yasser Gomez, and Juan Yasser tell ESPN that they have been declared free agents.
- Indians DFA yet another reliever Jose Veras, to make room for Jess Todd.
August Trades, Waivers and More
- Teams have to pass players through waivers to trade them after the deadline.
- Players acquired after August 31st can't play in the postseason.
- Teams will often put most of their players on waivers to determine interest because you don't have to give up every player you waive.
- Unclaimed players can be traded to any clubs in August.
- Claimed player can be kept, traded, or handed over to the claiming team, who would then have to pay the player's salary.
- If only one team claims a player, he can only be dealt to that team.
- If more than one team claims a player, he can only be traded to the team with the worst record in his league.
- If the player's only claimed by teams in the other league, he can only be dealt to the team with the worst record.
Last August Adam Dunn was dealt. Will we see another big named dealt this year?

**Carl Crawford, Tampa Bay Rays- Carl had a great afternoon, he went 3-5 and drove in 3 runs, giving him 50 RBIs with a double and a stolen base. Carl is now hitting .317.
**Tyler Clippard, Washington Nationals- He came into the game, with his Nationals trailing, he weathered the storm. His Nationals awarded him by taking the lead and keeping it. He worked 3 scoreless innings, he didn't walk anyone and struck out 2. Tyler now has a 2.52 ERA after getting his 2Nd win of the season.
**Randy Wells, Chicago Cubs- Randy threw 7 1/3 innings, giving up 1 run (1 earned), he walked 2 and struck out 5. Randy won his 8Th game and he now has a 2.73 ERA.
**Clete Thomas, Detroit Tigers- Clete hit a walk off Home Run, his 7Th Home Run of the season, he drove in his 29Th run of the season. Thomas is now hitting .269.
